About Us.

Fast Facts

The University Barge Club was founded April 25, 1854 by 10 members of the freshman class of the University of Pennyslvania.

The boathouse, comprising nos. 7 and 8 Boathouse Row, was constructed in 1871 and substantially expanded in 1893 to accommodate eight-man shells.

Since 1964, it has been home to the scholastic rowing programs of Chestnut Hill Academy and, more recently, Springside School. From 1971 through 2008, University Barge Club hosted the annual Thomas Eakins Head of the Schuylkill Regatta, a 2.75-mile head race held every October and founded by UBC members.  The Regatta incorporated independently before the 2009 race.

Maintenance of the historic structure is entrusted to the UBC 1871 Foundation, a 501(c)3 corporation.
