1871 Foundation.

What is the UBC 1871 Foundation?

The UBC 1871 Foundation is a 501(c)3 charitable organization approved by the IRS on February 8, 2006; it is authorized to receive tax-deductible contributions to maintain the structure and exterior of the University Barge Club as part of a National Historic District.

Why was the Foundation created?

• Maintaining large historic structures is extremely expensive and requires philanthropic dollars as part of the revenue model.
• Its tax-exempt status entitles donors to make tax-deductible gifts to the Foundation.
• It qualifies “matching gift” companies to augment employee donations on a tax-deductible basis.
• And it allows the Foundation to pursue gift and grants from outside sources.

What is the relationship between the UBC 1871 Foundation and the University Barge Club?

The Foundation owns the exterior and structural elements of the Boathouse located at No. 7 Boathouse Row.  The Foundation maintains the exterior and structure as part of the Boathouse Row National Historic District.

The Club owns the interior, interior improvements and equipment, and possesses continued use of the Boathouse.  The Club maintains the interior and the equipment, and provides insurance on them and the structure.

Under these arrangements, the Foundation’s expenditures are made solely in support of its mission of non-profit historic preservation.

Mission
